Safety and Health

•The Winter 2006/2007 issue of the AIChE newsletter Safety & Health News is now posted on the ACS Division of Chemical Health and Safety [CHAS] web site.

• The EPA/NIOSH School Chemistry Laboratory Safety Guide, published in November, 2006, is a very good attempt to help chemistry teachers and students. It is not without problems, however, as my comments point out.

• Accidents occur 10 to 50 times more often in academic than in industrial labs! So says John Borchardt in one of the articles featured in the August 4, 2006 issue of Science Careers. That article is titled Staying Well in the Lab, and includes links to the others.

• One of the best--and perhaps least well known--places to find up-to-the-minute chemical safety information is the Letters to the Editor section of Chemical and Engineering News [C&EN], the magazine that every ACS member gets weekly. Here is the place to find info on very new substances, whose safety info has not yet been studied or found its way into books. This compilation of letters on lab accidents is in the on-line C&EN.

• The American Industrial Hygiene Association has a collection of lab safety incidents that might be helpful to you either in your own education, or to help convince students that it can happen to me.
